A Beacon of Learning
Established in 1967; Mosul University is one of the largest research and higher education centers in the Middle East and the second largest university in Iraq after Baghdad University.
The university includes twenty collages, seven research centers, six consultation offices, five medical clinics and hospitals and six museums in addition to a number of management directorates. Over the years, the university has graduated countless Iraqi and non-Iraqi scientists, doctors, writers, artists and politicians; Ibraheem Al Ja’fari, Rozh Noory Shawais, Father Suhail Qasha and Ahmed Zawaity are a few of the prominent notables that come to mind right now.
Since its establishment, it has been a center of coexistence and a catalyst of healthy discussion between Iraq’s many different religions and nationalities.
Post ISIS War
Around 65 percent of the university was destroyed, says Yunus Karim, director of communications for Mosul University as Iraq’s second largest university was under the control of anti-education extremists for three years. Recently reopened, both students and teachers see the possibilities for a better Iraq on campus. Although the signs of war are still visible on both the buildings and the faces of the students; that has not stopped an estimated 35,000 students from starting class.
